Back to School 2023

Our small and mighty team have launched our after school feeding program in partnership with the YMCA of the Capital Area and Front Yard Bikes. We're so excited to be back in the school routine, and providing healthy snacks for kids. Our partner sites are getting a weekly delivery of fresh fruit from Top Box, who source their produce from local farmers. In addition we provide a healthy whole grain or protein item.

Are you looking for healthy snacks for you kids at home? In today's fast-paced world, finding healthy snacks that kids actually enjoy can sometimes feel like a challenge. But fear not, because we've got you covered! It's essential to provide growing children with snacks that not only tantalize their taste buds but also contribute to their overall well-being. Here are five delightful and nutritious snack ideas that will make both parents and kids happy.

  1. Crunchy Veggie Sticks with Hummus: Swap out the greasy potato chips for a colorful array of crunchy vegetable sticks. Carrots, cucumbers, bell peppers, and celery are fantastic options that offer vitamins, minerals, and fiber. Pair these vibrant veggies with a side of hummus for a protein-rich dip that not only adds flavor but also provides healthy fats.

  2. Fruit Kabobs: Make snack time a creative adventure by assembling colorful fruit kabobs. Thread chunks of assorted fruits like berries, melon, grapes, and pineapple onto skewers. These visually appealing treats are not only fun to eat but also packed with vitamins, antioxidants, and natural sweetness. They're perfect for satisfying a sweet craving while keeping sugar intake in check.

  3. Greek Yogurt Parfait: Turn plain Greek yogurt into a delightful parfait by layering it with fresh fruits and a sprinkle of granola. Greek yogurt is a fantastic source of protein and probiotics, contributing to healthy digestion and strong bones. The combination of textures and flavors in this snack makes it a winner in terms of taste and nutrition.

  4. Cheese and Whole Grain Crackers: Cheese and whole grain crackers are a classic combo that offers a good balance of protein, healthy fats, and complex carbohydrates. Opt for varieties of cheese that are lower in sodium and pair them with whole grain crackers for a satisfying and filling snack that can even be assembled by little hands.

  5. Nut Butter and Banana Rice Cakes: Rice cakes provide a light and crunchy base for this delectable snack. Spread a thin layer of your preferred nut butter (like peanut or almond) on a rice cake and top it with banana slices. Nut butters bring healthy fats and protein to the table, while bananas add natural sweetness and a dose of potassium.

Choosing healthy snacks for kids doesn't have to be a daunting task. By incorporating colorful fruits, crunchy veggies, protein-packed options, and whole grains, you can create snacks that are not only delicious but also nourishing. These ideas not only promote good nutrition but also introduce kids to a variety of flavors and textures, setting them on a path towards lifelong healthy eating habits. So, get creative in the kitchen and enjoy the smiles that come with serving these delightful treats!
